How to Keep Things Rolling Without a Consultant
Weird article to write on a consulting page, right? But let’s be real, hiring can feel like a big decision, and bringing someone in at the right time is important.
Here are a few ways to keep things moving without hiring anyone:
Prioritize Like a Boss: Break down your big to-do list and focus on what’s going to have the most impact. And get honest with how much time it’s really going to take you so that you can set realistic goals. Sometimes, all it takes is putting your energy into the right things to get out of a rut or gain momentum.
Weekly Planning Sessions: I recommend weekly planning sessions. It doesn’t have to take long, maybe 30 mins to do a “look ahead” and set yourself up for the week. An accountability buddy can also really help here - and that’s free if you use someone in your network.
Use Your Free Resources: Ask ChatGPT. If you haven’t tried that, you should! Ask it about business problems. Have it write emails. Tell it to prioritize your to-do list or create a checklist for you. If it feels too scary that’s ok too. But consider giving it a try.
Lean on Your Network: Don’t be afraid to reach out to other business owners or make connections with new ones in your industry. Chances are they’ve been where you are and can offer some solid advice (and maybe a little comfort that you’re not alone).
Experiment with Small Tweaks: If you’re not ready for big moves, try making small changes. Test different approaches in your processes or team meetings. I like to advise people to “try it on for size.” Just because you try something doesn’t mean you have to do it for ever! But little improvements can make a big difference over time. (Ever heard of The Compound Effect?)
Try a Freelance Flex - dip your toes into outsourcing without the commitment:
Outsource Bits and Pieces: Maybe you don’t need a full-blown hiring agreement just yet. Outsource specific tasks in a part-time way – like social media, accounting, or admin – to free up your time without a big commitment.
Try a Test Project First: If you’re not 100% sure, start with a small project or short-term agreement. This gives you a sense of how someone works and the value they bring without diving into a long-term relationship.
I want you to know that it’s not only ok to ask for help, it’s nearly always rewarding when you finally do. And now you have a few ideas on how to get that support. Sometimes short-term support helps you get back on track and frees up a lot of your mental energy to do other things in your business.
If you are in this in-between space, and want help prioritizing or want someone to develop the weekly look ahead, of course that’s what I’m super great at and it’s my favorite place to be. I really enjoy doing it. (Yes, that’s actually true.) If you don’t enjoy it, that’s ok! There is a different level of accountability and dedication that comes into play when you’re working with a professional. That’s just something to keep in mind as you decide what support you need right now.
I’ll write another article on what to do if you’re feeling ready to hire. But until then, you got this! Take a moment to remember why exactly you started your business in the first place. Celebrate small wins every day. Don’t be afraid to take breaks. I believe in you — do you?
